After the 1952 coup, Gamal Abdel Nasser’s government set out to build a new Egyptian identity — nationalist, anti-imperialist, and socialist — and cinema became one of its main stages. The 1950s produced a new generation of Egyptian film stars, and this book examines three of the most influential: Omar Sharif, Ismail Yassin, and Farid Shawqi.
Grounded in film and cultural studies, the book traces how each actor’s screen persona — through melodrama, comedy, or action — negotiated a different version of Egyptian masculinity, caught between the era’s push toward modernity, education, and equality, and its insistence on preserving traditional values. A close reading of how cinema helped shape, and sell, a national identity still recognizable today.
