The story begins with Pip’s childhood encounters, including a terrifying meeting with an escaped convict, Abel Magwitch, and his introduction to the eccentric, reclusive Miss Havisham and her beautiful, cold adopted daughter, Estella. Pip becomes infatuated with Estella and aspires to become a “gentleman” in order to win her affection and escape his working-class life.
